Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children Book One

Recap: define magic realism and metafiction.

Individually you are to read the first page thoroughly and mark any word, image or sentence that:

-       Give examples of how:
o   East meets West
o   How past meets present
-       Give examples of traits of:
o   Magic realism
o   Metafiction

Now, in small groups discuss what you found out and look at the next 3 pages. You are to give concrete examples or quotes that will illustrate any of the above categories.

Recap of the topic India – Colonial and Postcolonial Insight:

In your group you are to make a presentation (vodcast/podcast) to which you can use one of the programs below. The focus of the assignment is that you are to practice the oral presentation and recap on the topic “India – Colonial and Postcolonial Insight”.

Success criteria:
-       All members of the group have to present in the presentation.
-       Your presentation should:
o   Give a short introduction to the topic “India – Colonial and Postcolonial Insight” - why are we studying this? What are we to gain from this?
o   Include an explanation of the British colonization of India and its means (historically and literarily).
o   Draw a picture of India before and after colonization
o   Discuss Indian postcolonial/postmodern literature using Rushdie as your example (give examples).
Your presentation should draw upon at least one the other texts to highlight one or more of the above points.
To substantiate or support your oral presentation, you can draw on pictures or video clips (obviously if using screencast-o-matic).
